Promap is creating detailed high resolution point cloud data of South Africa from our latest Riegl VQ780i full wavefrom LiDAR. Over 11,000km² has been collected and processed in the last few months with more to be added over the coming months. Available off the shelf as a classified dataset and various derivative products such as DEM/DTM/contour maps and colourised point clouds.
LiDAR its use and its technology has, and continues. to develop rapidly. The global LiDAR market is expected to exceed $2.8 billion over the next 3 years (excluding the use in autonomous vehicles)
The latest sensors with their superior pulse rates enable highly efficient collections offering greater productivity than their predecessors. Higher accuracies and faster processing have fed the demand for very high definition point clouds, fuelled to a large extent by the rise and role of AI and machine learning. These technologies integrate and utilise the massive amounts of information the new sensors collect deriving greater insights and improving decision making.
"It was not long ago that 2pp/m² was the aerial collection industry “norm”, and even then, point clouds were ‘thinned’ as users were unable to make full use of the data. Today 15 – 25pp/m² is becoming the new “norm” and the rich information that is contained is being used in newer areas such as archeology and gaming. High density national collections are also increasing, with France recently announcing a program to capture the entire country at 10pp/m² over 5 years."Matt Murphy, Managing Director, Promap
